Across the USA: The ultimate family road trip

There’s nothing like the freedom of a road trip across the United States. First stop is always coffee, and whenever I hit the road, Buc-ee’s is always part of the route. Packing up the car, crossing into new states, and making spontaneous stops along the way create unforgettable memories. Discover how to plan your own adventure with budgeting tips, family-friendly ideas, and hidden gems that often become the best part of the journey.

How do you map out your road trips?

A simple way to map out a road trip is to pick one main route and build everything around it, rather than bouncing all over the map. For example, if I’m traveling down I-95 South, I’ll pull up Google Maps and follow that highway as my anchor. Then I look at the states along the route and search for kid-friendly stops—like playgrounds, farms, museums, rest areas, or unique roadside attractions—that are close to the highway.

I usually drop those spots into a running document with details like distance from the main route, travel time, and notes on whether it fits the kids’ needs (space to run, quick stop, food options, etc.). I keep everything centered around the main highway so the trip flows smoothly, and I only allow detours if they’re really worth it—usually no more than about 20 minutes off the route. This keeps the trip organized, stress-free, and still flexible enough for fun discoveries along the way.

Safety Tips

A few important safety tips I always follow: I avoid secluded rest stops and stick to well-traveled, busy areas whenever possible. Before a long journey, I make sure the car is fully serviced and ready for the road, and I always have roadside assistance like AAA just in case. I also keep multiple ways to stay connected—my cell phone is charged, and I bring an extra device, like an iPad or a backup phone, in case of no service or a dead battery.

Island escapes: Bahamas family fun

Our first Royal Caribbean cruise is coming soon, and the excitement is real! From ocean views and endless buffets to island stops and family-friendly adventures, we’re ready to make unforgettable memories together at sea. It’s our first time setting sail like this, and we can’t wait to explore, relax, and enjoy every moment of the journey.

What is included in your Royal Carribean Trip?

On a Royal Caribbean cruise, kids are honestly set up for nonstop fun, and a lot of it is included in your cruise fare.

Most ships have the Adventure Ocean Youth Program, which is a big highlight. It’s divided into age groups (little kids, tweens, and teens) and includes supervised games, arts and crafts, science activities, dance parties, scavenger hunts, and themed events—all run by trained staff so parents can relax, too.

Beyond the kids’ club, there’s so much more included:

  • Water fun like pools, splash pads, and kid-friendly water zones (on many ships)
  • Family entertainment, including shows, movies, and live performances
  • Sports & activities like mini golf, rock climbing walls, basketball courts, and arcade-style games
  • Themed parties and events just for kids and teens
  • Food options everywhere—buffets, snacks, pizza, and kid-friendly dining choices all day

Older kids and teens also have their own chill spaces, lounges, and organized hangouts where they can meet new friends and engage in age-appropriate activities.

In short, it’s like a floating resort where kids have their own full schedule of fun, and families still get to enjoy everything together too.

What islands did you visit?

Nassau, Bahamas
A colorful island stop full of tropical energy, turquoise waters, and Caribbean charm. From sandy beaches and local shops to historic streets and family-friendly excursions, Nassau is the perfect mix of adventure and island culture for a cruise day full of exploring, eating, and soaking up the sunshine.

Perfect Day at CocoCay
Royal Caribbean’s private island paradise is made for pure fun and relaxation. Think crystal-clear lagoons, white-sand beaches, splash zones for kids, giant water slides, and chill beach spots for parents. Everything is easy, family-friendly, and designed for a no-stress “perfect day” where you can play, relax, and repeat all day long.

What is cheaper?

Cruise  (often looks cheaper upfront)

  • Base price can seem low (especially deals on interior rooms)
  • Food, shows, kids’ activities, and transport between islands are included
  • BUT extras add up: drinks, Wi-Fi, excursions, specialty dining, and tips can raise the total cost

Independent island / all-inclusive resort (higher upfront, more included)

  • Usually costs more per night at booking
  • But often includes more “true all-inclusive” perks like drinks, food, beach access, and activities in one price
  • Fewer surprise add-ons once you’re there

Simple way to think about it:

  • If you want a budget-friendly starting price + variety of destinations, → cruise often wins
  • If you want simple pricing with fewer extras + more space + one destination → resort can be a better value overall
